Religion as Reconstruction

The early centuries of Christianity were strange in ways that are difficult to comprehend. The explanations I have heard make no sense. One common explanation is that people were backwards and ignorant and when everyone around you is dying, you’re desperate to join. Another explanation is that when the Roman Empire collapsed, the elites moved into the church, and everyone felt compelled to join. With saints, the stories of endless beheadings and materials makes it seem that this was all made up to give the religion some intensity and to help grow the movement.

It is no coincidence that so many religions and philosophies took hold in a brief period around 2500 years ago. Those ideas are still the bedrock of our entire civilization today. It doesnt matter whether you believe in these systems or are even aware of them, as they still form the basis of everything we have.

This isn’t a coincidence, because for a myriad of factors, there was a start and then explosion of consciousness that spread around the world. What do you think would happen if you suddenly started to hear voices, become aware of your own existence, and realize we are fundamentally different than anything else? You wouldn’t know how to react. This is exactly why things took off. These people were visiting liminal spaces and seeing a bright new reality that nobody had ever seen before. The membrane between our shared world and these liminal spaces was incredibly thin.

Interior life and personal guilt were discovered and created 2500 years ago. There simply was no concept of consciousness or personal interior life before this. It may be hard to understand, but the way we think today is relatively new.

What does someone do with newly discovered consciousness and experiences and visions you don’t understand? You copy them. You mimick the things you’re seeing in these liminal spaces. You create physical realities to reflect as best you can, the vibe you get from these places.

Religion was not created 2500 years ago, but existed for thousands of years prior, but only as a state religion. The massive change was the focus on individual experience.
